Dog Days of Summit
2007

The library held a series of weekly programs throughout August to promote the love, care and well-being of the family pet. Dog Days of Summit took place each Saturday at the Summit Branch, 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School.

This multi-generational, and multi-species program, involves many local businesses and organizations and was funded by a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.

The topic of Week 1 was “Choosing Your New Best Friend” with speakers from Sierra’s Haven, a no-kill animal shelter in Portsmouth, Ohio. One of our staff members, Allison Scarberry, adopted a dog that day, and others adopted a hamster, a fish and another dog.

Week 2's topic was Care and Feeding of Your Furry Friend” presented by Guardian Animal Hospital. Mark Blair, Summit branch supervisor, explained worms that day.

Week 3 featured Pet First Aid program with presenters Tanya Meadows and Terri Tomondi, certified Red Cross instructors.

The series culminated on Saturday, Sept. 1, with a Pet Pageant and Parade.
