Here is a sampling of the comments patrons made on postcards sent to Boyd County's state senator and representatives as part of Kentucky Legislative Day (Feb. 10):

I support my public library because ...

    • "The library provides services for all people. My mother receives home services through the library and would be very disappointed if this service would be discontinued. If I could earmark my tax dollars, I would want them to go to the library and education."
    • "It's a wonderful learning place forall ages. It doesn't mater if you're rich or poor, the libraries are for eveyrone to enjoy."
    • "Staff is incredibly polite, educated and helpful. I have never felt more welcome in any other library. I have also learned things from this library and staff that I never learned in school."
    • "Reading is my release from stress. I walk in one place and can go anywhere. I love the fact I can get information and entertainment in one area. Please keep it!"
    • "It's an amazing place for children, young adults such as myself, and even older people to discover the wonderful world of literature. I honestly don't think I would enjoy reading half as much if it weren't for the…

It's that taxing time of year ... and The Library is ready once again to help.

Federal forms and instructions are available free of charge at the Main Branch in Ashland, as well as the Catlettsburg and Summit branches. The Kentucky Revenue Cabinet does not provide bulk forms and instructions to libraries, but BCPL staff will print off one copy of every state form that a patron needs. Additional copies are 10 cents per page. Instructions can also be printed at a cost of 10 cents per page.

To get Kentucky forms, you can also go to www.revenue.ky.gov/forms or call (502) 564-3658.

The Summit Branch is hosting free tax preparation assistance again this year, provided by local representatives from the American Association of Retired Persons. The help is available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 3 and running through April 14, and is for those in the middle- to low-income categories, with special attention to people 60 and older.

Those needing help should bring with them: all the necessary 2009 tax forms, including W-2; copies of 2008 federal and state income tax returns; unemployment compensation statements, SSA-1099 (for Social Security benefits); all 1099 forms…

It was colorful chaos at the Summit Branch on Jan. 6, at the branch's first-ever Lego competition. About 20 kids tried to impress the judges with their best Lego sculpture. Their only tools: a cup of Legos and 45 minutes on the clock. The competition was fierce, to say the least. The winning starfighter is shown below!

There are hundreds of Census jobs available in Kentucky. Most of the jobs are for field workers, who will go door-to-door to talk to people who have not returned their Census forms. For more information, or to register for a test, call 866-861-2010. The website is www.census.gov/2010census.
