As these things go, plans at the mall are really picking up and grand opening updatemoving fast!  In just the last few days we’ve wrapped up the last of the interior orders and are finalizing install dates.  Now the hard work can begin!

  • Week of March 13, nine positions around the district will be opened and advertised.
  • Construction is scheduled to finish the end of March.
  • April 1, positions close.
  • Week of April 4, interviews begin—well I hope, anyway.
  • Carpeting and tile install is planned to be completed no later than April 8.
  • Shelving will go in right behind carpet (which will take 3-4 days).
  • Once shelving is up we’ll start taking materials over and start loading shelves.
  • About April 11 staff workroom furniture will be installed (about 2-3 days).
  • About April 15 Front Desk and library furniture will arrive and be assembled (2-3 days).
  • [National Library Week is April 10-16…craziness ensues.]
  • As soon as furniture is in, computers will get installed.
  • April 18 programming ends at Summit and branch goes to minimal services.
  • Week of April 18 staff can begin moving backroom, supplies, and storage items.
  • April 25 Summit Branch closes to public access.
  • Week of April 24 make a mad dash to finalize it all for…
  • Wait, wait, there’s the “Murder at the Walgrave Astoria’s Annual Costume Ball” mystery dinner Friends fundraiser and sneak peak Friday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the Kyova Branch [yes, we are certifiable at this point].
  • Saturday and Sunday morning clean up and set up for…
  • …Grand Opening, May 1; ceremonies begin at 12:30 p.m. with ribbon cutting at 1:00 p.m.

During all of this, we will be having RFID installed (which is a new security system and inventory control for materials—along with other staff side uses), checkout will continue, questions will be asked and answered, library cards will be issued, and copious amounts of tea (and coffee) will be consumed.  All the while, we will do our best to keep track of our sanity!

Good news, bad news.

Layout looks great.  Walls are up, along with some sheetrock.  Wiring is just about finished; they are just waiting for electrical inspection.  Second entrance has been enclosed and is really going to look spiffy.

Rest of sheetrock will go up then they will start on the ceiling grid and tiles.  Walls will be painted and lighting should be in by then.  Construction/reconstruction should be finished by mid-end of February.

Color selection has been delayed…a lot.  These colors are so predominate that they drive the wall color, carpet selection, and fabrics picked, which means these things have not been ordered.  The architect was unable to match laminate colors so we have turned to the interior designer for selection.

We received the final shelving and furniture layout last week and have, preliminarily, picked out furniture.  The interior designer is putting together color combinations to select from.  Because of the snow in the South, he is having difficulty getting fabric and carpet samples but we should be able to finalize plans end of next week.

In the mean time, we should have a better timeline from the interior designer next week.  I expect that we will be looking at a revised opening date of April 1, “No Fooling!”  I will have a better idea next week.

The foreman on site and the electrician for the contractor have been great.  They have worked very well with us to make changes and catch up on the adjustments to the plans.

Despite the delay, it’s really going to be worth the wait.  Furniture is very modern, comfortable, and lovely.  As soon as samples are available I will post them.

Kyova Branch Progress PDF Print E-mail
Director's Blog

After all the excitement about the Kyova Branch, things kind of got quiet, which is exactly what happens in this part of the process.  Proposals are requested, bids received, bids award, and contracts are signed.  Seem that it takes such a long time for these things to get accomplished.  But we’ve signed a contract with Mullin’s Construction out of Wheelersburg, OH and progress is being made.  Deconstruction has begun so to be followed by construction and reconstruction.  Things will move swiftly until we reach the next lull…trust me there will be one.

We are now working with the furniture/shelving providers.  Picking colors, fabrics, and all the little details.  I find this about the hardest part of the entire process…too many choices!  But we have a place to start because we know we want this new branch to be very modern, bright, and easy to use.  With that in mind, are putting the colors of our logo into this branch.  The architect has done some renderings (drawings representing the concept).  Remember, that these are just conceptual and the final product will most likely differ from these pictures, but stay true to the spirit.

I just love this time of year! PDF Print E-mail
Director's Blog

I like cold, clear days where the sun is so bright and the air so clear it makes my eyes water, moonlit evening snow falls, and waking up to icy Sunday mornings where the only thing I have to do is make tea.  I tend to become a hermit during winter, curling up with a good book or pulling out a big cross-stitch project; it’s just too gooey to work in the yard, too cold to work around the house, and nobody wants to get out “in this weather”.

Most of my favorite authors have been waiting over the warmer days as I worked in the yard and around the house.  I never have gotten the concept of “a summer read”—there’s just too much to do plus I’m not one for vacationing when there’s a chance my fair skin could be sunburned and the mosquitoes were out.  As the evenings get longer, out come my bright colored embroidery threads and cheerful patterns that have been hidden away in a big drawer waiting to be started.  During the longer days, I’m usually too tired to begin a complicated project by the time I finally stop.

So take advantage of the colder days and longer nights to resume (or start) a cheerful hobby or pick up a book by your favorite writer (or discover a new one).  And on one of those lovely winter days visit The Library, we have a book for that.
