"Make a Splash," the 2010 Summer Reading program, finished strong! Kids and library staff had fun throughout June and July, making crafts, playing games and, of course, reading. We had visits from fun and informative guests, including the Newport Aquarium, a theatrical version of "The Ugly Duckling" and the return of Magician Mark Comley. Along the way, kids earned cool prizes such as beach balls, water bottles, inflatable alligators, books and Super Soakers.
Here are some numbers:
- A total of 609 children (age 12 and under) read for 12,614 hours - an average of more than 20 hours per child.
- There were 59 teen participants, who read for 3,332 hours, averaging an amazing 56 hours per teen.
High attendance at all three branches caused library staff to find some innovative ways to handle this good problem: At Summit, we borrowed a tent from the National Guard and held programs outside; and in Catlettsburg, we partnered with the nearby train depot for extra space. Thanks to both of those groups. And thanks to all the kids and their parents.

The fun has begun!!
We've officially kicked off our Summer Reading 2010 programs, and are thrilled with the number of kids and teens taking part. Nearly 200 attended the "Make a Splash" kickoffs at Main and Summit on June 5, and attendance at this week's regular programs has been great.

There's still plenty of time to get in on the fun. The Make a Splash schedule is as follows: 2 p.m Tuesdays at Main (ages 4 to 12); 1 p.m. Mondays (ages 8-12) and 1 p.m. Tuesdays (ages 4 to 7) at Summit; and 10:30 a.m. Thursdays (ages 4 to 12) at Catlettsburg. To go to the summer reading page, click here.

Teens get to "Make Waves" this summer with their own program. This year, you can choose between Thursdays at 4 p.m. at Main, or Mondays at 3 p.m. at Summit. The weekly programs include a pirate scavenger hunt, do-it-yourself snow globes and flip-flops, a Wii game day, a beach food sculpture program, and outdoor water games.
All the while, kids and teens can earn rewards for the time spent reading. To see the awesome reading rewards, click here.
Kids (and parents) will also like the "Make a Splash" movies each Friday at noon at Main. Bring your own lunch, and we'll give you drinks and chips. The movie lineup is: June 11, "The Princess and the Frog;" June 18, "The Water Horse;" June 25, "Shark Tale;" July 2, "Surf's Up;" July 9, "Finding Nemo;' July 16, "Ponyo;" and July 23, "Flipper."
In keeping with the water theme, we are also hosting a live theatrical performance of "The Ugly Duckling," on June 16. There will be a 3 p.m. show at Summit, and a 6 p.m. show at Main.
The wet summer fun wraps up with a pool party at Dawson Pool in Ashland for all participants on July 31. Wow!
As you can see, there's a ton going on at the Library this summer. But fun aside, there are serious reasons for continuing to read over the summer months. Stufies show that kids who read at least a few books during the summer are less likely to lose the skills they learned during the school year.
Parents can read along with their kids, and earn rewards for the number of books (click here for adult rewards list.). They just have to submit a brief book review for each one. We call the adult program "Water Your Mind." To submit a book review, and see what others have read, click here.
No matter what you call it, the goal of all the programs is the same: keep reading and having fun all summer long!

The Youth Services department now has Discovery Packs available for checkout. These clear backpacks are filled with books, activities and games. Each pack has a different theme, such as castles, dinosaurs, telling time or counting, and can be checked out for seven days. They are housed at the Main Branch, but can be reserved and sent to Catlettsburg or Summit. Check them out!

To celebrate this weekend's Running of the Roses at Churchill Downs, we're giving away two copies of Derby Day, a pop-up book by Pamela Pease. Register in the youth services department at the Main Branch (one entry per day, please). We'll draw the winners Saturday afternoon.

Ali May, a fifth grader at Russell Middle School, was the Library's choice for the best ad design in The (Ashland) Independent's recent Design an Ad contest. Ali's creation, promoting "Make a Splash," the 2010 Summer Reading program, was selected by library staff from among more than 50 entries. Ali is the daughter of James and Jennifer May of Russell. Her teacher is Linda Thompson. Congratulations Ali!

Congratulations to Alex Dudley, Aryssa Damron, Payton Ratliff and Matthew Chappelle, who won prizes during Teen Tech Week (March 7-13)!
Alex and Mathew correctly answered trivia questions about the Library and its teen programs, posted on the teen Facebook and Myspace pages. Aryssa and Payton joined as friends/fans this week. All four get a BCPL recyclable tote bag filled with goodies.
We'd still love for more teens to join either of those sites - it's a great way to keep up with all the fun programs and services the Library offers.
Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association. The aim is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technologies, especially those that are offered through libraries. The theme of the 3rd annual Teen Tech Week is “Learn Create Share @ Your Library.”

Attending a weekly story time program at the Library is a great way to help your child get ready for school. Why? Because story times such as the ones at BCPL allow children to get used to being around other children in a structured program, and promote the enjoyment of reading.

We offer weekly story times for toddlers and preschoolers. Toddler Time (for beginning walkers to age 3) is on Fridays, at 11:30 a.m. at Main and 1 p.m. at Summit. Preschool Story Time (ages 3-5) is at 10:30 a.m. Fridays at Main and at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays at Summit. Can't make it to a daytime program? Then come to Stories Before Bedtime at 6 p.m. Thursdays at Main.
Drop in any time and see how much fun we're having!

The Library's Hands that Touch a Heart campaign was a huge success this year -- thanks to all the children who made cards at our three branches, and the many outside groups that took part.
This year's grand total of 1,399 Valentines far surpasses any of the previous five years' totals. The car ds -- all uniquely decorated by area children -- are currently on their way to local soldiers serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, and to residents of area nursing homes. We use the web site, www.anysoldier.com, to locate Kentucky soldiers serving overseas. The cards are sent to that organization, and then mailed in groups to military units. Many soldiers have written to the Library in the past, saying how grateful they are to receive a homemade card.
Library staff will deliver about 500 of the cards before Valentine's Day to Boyd Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Hamilton's Personal Care Home, King's Daughters & Sons Home for Aged Men and Women; Kingsbrook Lifecare Center; Woodland Oaks, Artrip's Health Care; Ashland Active Day Care and Community Hospice House.
Our thanks go to Lee Ward and The Independent & Scott Martin at WLGC, for helping to publicize the program, and to the following outside groups that made cards: Mrs. Thompson's first grade class at Fairview Elementary; Meade Station Church of God children's church; Community Presbyterian Church's children's Bible class; Mrs. Keener's kindergarten class at Hatcher Elementary; Girls Scout Troops 912, 1271 & 985 of Ashland; Flatwoods Head Start Class #2, Unity Baptist Church's children's church; Daisy Troop 2881 of Wheelersburg; and Ponderosa, Oakview and Crabbe elementaries.

Right now, visitors to The Library (all branches) are participating in an effort to make Valentine's Day a little brighter for the elderly and those who are far away from home and might not have anyone to share that special day. The fourth annual "Hands that Touch a Heart" campaign is in full swing, through Feb. 7. Our goal is to make 1,000 Valentines this year, and we need everyone's help! Just stop in at Main, Catlettsburg or Summit, and ask to make a card. We have all the supplies; all that's needed is your creativity and heart-felt wishes to make the card complete. The Valentines will be distributed to area nursing home residents, and also sent to members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving overseas. If your club or group would like to make Valentines at an upcoming meeting, we can provide the card templates. Simply stop in, or call Amanda Clark at (606) 329-0518, ext. 1140.

The Library's two youth book clubs have a new, fun format starting in 2010. Both the Tween Book Club, which meets at Main on the first Tuesday, and the Middle School Book Club, which takes place at the Summit Branch on the second Wednesday, will look at popular book series each month, instead of one particular book. First up is the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series by Jeff Kinney. Join other kids to talk abut Greg Heffley and all his problems as he maneuvers his way through the trials of middle school. There will be trivia games and other activities, as well as a drawing for a special prize. And, oh yeah, pizza!! The Tween club (for grades 4-6) is Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. at Main. The Middle School club (for grades 6-8) is Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. (new time!) at Summit. In February, both clubs will discuss the "Warriors" series by Erin Hunter. The groups will look at different series in March: "Alex Rider" by Anthony Horowitz for the tween club; and "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini for the middle schoolers. Grade ranges are a guideline.
