Search Tips for Locating and Searching for eBooks

There are several ways to locate specific eBooks in a NetLibrary collection:

  • Basic Search lets you search by Keyword or other criteria from the NetLibrary navigation bar. Enter your search information in the search box displayed at the top of the screen.
  • Advanced Search lets you search by title, author, subject, or other criteria; you can also limit your search results by year published, language, and more.

Search Options

You can choose from several different options to locate an eBook. Depending on the type of search, some of these options may be unavailable.

  • The Keyword option searches for your terms in the title, author, Library of Congress subject heading, publisher and ISBN fields. You may enter single terms (example: programming) or multiple terms that may be found in the same or different fields (example: pride prejudiceor midsummer Shakespeare).
  • The Full Text option searches for your terms in every word of every eBook. When using the full text option in Quick Search, the keywords are also searched and keyword results appear before full text results. Use this option to search for words that may appear in the text of a book but not in the title or other fields or to search for text you remember from a book. When using this search option, be as specific as possible.
  • The Title option searches all titles for the terms you entered. You may enter the exact title (example: A Tale of Two Cities) or any portion of the title in any order (example: Huckleberry adventures). It is not necessary to enter beginning articles in the title (the, a, an, etc.)
  • The Author option searches all authors for the name(s) you entered. You may enter the name in any order, with or without punctuation, and capitalization is not necessary (example: Twain, Mark or mark twain orTwain Mark).
  • The Subject option searches Library of Congress Subject Headings for the terms you entered. You may enter a single term (example: computer) or multiple terms (example: civil war history).
  • The Publisher option searches all netLibrary publishers for the publisher name you entered.
  • The Publication Year (Power Search) or Date (Command Search) option searches for the publication date or date range you entered. Dates must be entered in whole years only. You may enter a single date (example: 1998) for titles published in 1998, an inclusive date range (example: 1955-1995) for titles published in or between 1955 and 1995, the beginning of a date range (example: -1960) for titles published in or before 1960, or the end of a date range (example:1960-) for titles published in or after 1960.
  • The ISBN option searches both the print and electronic version for the ISBN you entered.

Basic Search

Basic Search lets you easily locate an eBook. You can use this search without logging into NetLibrary. However, to browse or check out an eBook, you must create a user account and log in.

  1. On the NetLibrary home page, enter search informaiton in the Search box displayed at the top of your screen.
  2. Select a search option from the list. You can search Keyword, Full Text, Title, Author or Subject.
  3. Click Go to start the search.

Note: To help novice or inexperienced users easily locate information when performing a Quick Search, NetLibrary automatically expands the search to include all variations of a word. For example, if you enter the search term flower, NetLibrary also searches for the words flowering, flowers, flowered, etc.

Advanced Search

Advanced Search locates an eBook by Title, Author, Subject, Keyword, Full Text, Publisher, Publication Year, ISBN or any combination of these criteria. In addition, Power Search allows you to customize your search results display; you can order your results by the number of occurrences of your search words, author, title, publisher, or publication year.

  1. Click the Advanced Search link below the Basic Search box.
  2. Enter search information in one or more of the fields displayed.
  3. Select an option to either search eBooks owned by your library, search eBooks not owned by your library, or search the NetLibrary Public Collection. eBooks that are not part of your library's collection will be marked in the search results with an asterisk (*).
  4. Select options to determine how the search results are displayed.
  5. Click Search to start the search.

Note: You may reorder your search results, after the search is completed, by using the Display results by dropdown list on the search results page.

Search Results

Search results are usually arranged by number of occurrences (based on the frequency of your search terms). netLibrary returns a maximum of 300 search results. The amount of information displayed depends on whether you choose the Brief display or Full display option before starting the search.

When using the Power and Command Search functions you can select the order in which you wish your search results to appear (number of occurences, author, title, publisher, or publication year) before performing the search. You may reorder your search results, after the search is completed, by using the Display results by dropdown list on the search results page.

Search results include title, author, publisher and publication year information. To view more information about the book before reading or checking it out, click the title. A book summary page ("About this eBook") is displayed.

Note: the Browse function may not be available for all NetLibrary eBooks.
