Welcome to the Library PDF Print E-mail

We're glad you are here!

Now that you are, what can you do? A lot. You can find that book you've been dying to read, or the latest DVD or CD. You can even check out a book on a iPod.  If someone else has what you want right now, you can place a hold and we'll let you know as soon as the other person is done. Just click on the "Catalog" tab at the top of the page to search for materials and place them on hold!

You can find out times and locations of all our fun programs - whether you are a toddler coming with mom or dad, or a teen wanting to meet other teens and have some fun. We have stuff going on all the time, for all ages.Check out our Kids' Calendar to see what's happening right now!

We have great books, of course, including a lot of the ones on your AR list at school. Speaking of school, if you are having trouble with your homework, you can go to the tutor.com link and be connected to a live homework helper. There's also a service called AskWhyKY, which lets you chat with a librarian 24/7/365.

Lots of cool stuff! So come explore your library.

Summer Reading Program PDF Print E-mail

Eight weeks of water-themed fun is coming to the Library in June and July. So, get ready to "Make a Splash!" with us.

Summer Reading 2010 officially kicks off Saturday, June 5, with special guests from the Newport Aquarium. There will be two chances to attend: 11 a.m. at Summit; and 2 p.m. at Main. From then on, there are fun weekly craft and storytime programs. There will be separate programs for tweens (ages 8-12) that involve more challenging activities.  All the while, kids can keep track of the hours they spend reading and earn cool rewards, including water bombs, beach ball, beach towel and an inflatable alligator pool toy (for reading 50 hours.)

The Make a Splash schedule is as follows: 2 p.m Tuesdays at Main (ages 4 to 12); 1 p.m. Mondays (ages 8-12) and 1 p.m. Tuesdays (ages 4 to 7) at Summit; and 10:30 a.m. Thursdays (ages 4 to 12) at Catlettsburg.

Teens get to "Make Waves" this summer with their own program. This year, you can choose between Thursdays at 4 p.m. at Main, or Mondays at 3 p.m. at Summit. The teen "Battleship Kickoff" is June 7 at Summit and June 10 at Main. The weekly programs include a pirate scavenger hunt, do-it-yourself snow globes and flip-flops, a Wii game day, a beach food sculpture program, and outdoor water games. Teen reading rewards are awesome again this year - from a water bottle, to a beach towl & tote combo, to a Super Soaker (50-hour reward).

Oh, we almost forgot - kids and teens can earn a book of their choice by reading 25 hours this summer. Thanks to the Boyd County Public Library Friends for donating the book rewards!!

Kids (and parents) will also like the "Make a Splash" movies each Friday at noon at Main. Bring your own lunch, and we'll give you drinks and chips. The movie lineup is: June 11, "The Princess and the Frog;" June 18, "The Water Horse;" June 25, "Shark Tale;" July 2, "Surf's Up;" July 9, "Finding Nemo;' July 16, "Ponyo;" and July 23, "Flipper."

In keeping with the water theme, we are also hosting a live theatrical performance of "The Ugly Duckling," on June 16. There will be a 3 p.m. show at Summit, and a 6 p.m. show at Main.

The wet summer fun wraps up with a pool party at Dawson Pool in Ashland for all participants on July 31. Wow!

As you can see, there's a ton going on at the Library this summer. But fun aside, there are serious reasons for continuing to read over the summer months. Stufies show that kids who read at least a few books during the summer are less likely to lose the skills they learned during the school year.

Parents can read along with their kids, and earn rewards for the number of books. They just have to submit a brief book review for each one.  We call the adult program "Water Your Mind."

No matter what you call it, the goal of all the programs is the same: keep reading and having fun all summer long!
